This an abstract digital painting I have just done. I just went with the flow on this, eventually as it took shape I saw the end scene from Jaws as the leviathan sinks to the bottom of the ocean. I was obsessed with that film as a kid, still holds up and is clearly rooted in my subconscious.
I was thinking of using this for Erth Chronicles - it certainly conveys the mood and art direction for Old Yana.
I mainly used custom brushes and textures from my sketchbook.
How did you DO that? And could you, perhaps, point me in the direction of said custom brushes? Your style of art is making me want to expand my horizons and give it a shot.

I use Photoshop. Basically any drawings you do in your sketchbook, such as a rock for example can be defined as a brush. So you can literally paint with a rock. Applying the same process to other subject matter to convey the escence of what you are after, you can define any drawing, or even contrasted photographs. If you paint with bone-like shapes, you'll get a deathly image.
The other important thing you need is a Wacom Intuous 3 Graphic Tablet. They are expensive, but well worth the investment. For a custom brushes tutorial DVD I would highly recommend David Levy's 'From Speed Painting to COncept Art'. It's yet another fantastic DVD from [link]. They have an exhaustive supply of training DVDs from the professionals, including Ryan Church and Doug Chiang who both worked on the Star Wars prequels - but I'll forgive them for that. ImagineFX is well worth trying to get hold of at your local News Agents. This is the industry magazine for Sci-Fi and Fantasy art and often has tutorials on the process.
What brings the paintings alive is knowing how to refine and apply texture from your sketchbooks and utilising the blending mode options to enhance the colours and refine the texture. It's all about 'free association', trying to see something that isn't initially there. Happy accidents are as important as planning a drawing or painting, especially while experimenting with the tools.

I'll have to check out all those DVD stuffs. I do happen to have a tablet - Wacom Intuos3, no less. It's a 6x8, which works fine size-wise for me.
I like your style of abstract art, and, in reference to some of your other art, I hadn't really known was vector art was, but I quite like it if yours is anything to judge by. Have any favourite vector artists? I'd like to see more of this sort of thing.

Cheers for the comments. I wouldn't say I hava favourite vector artists, but I appreciate some of the companies such as Twelveten and Designers Republic that tended to harness this style back in the late 90s.

There are a lot of themes that run through the stock gallery many people have similar ideas but they pull them off in different ways. In this series of newsletters we will look at similar ideas but different outcomes.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More

I like those spike-things; they look like a spine.
